Title: What do you like to listen to?
Post by: Ed on November 26, 2007, 07:08:48 PM
Just wondering. My taste in music seems to broaden with every passing year and, unlike my parents, I don't dwell on a particular period of time in my life, exclusively listening to music from that time. If anything, I do the opposite. I feel like I've done that and need to move on - I want something new and fresh. Paradoxically, I'm also finding a new appreciation for music I didn't like at the time it was 'popular'. For instance, I find myself listening to and liking The Smiths, and Talking Heads, lately, among others. Always thought they were crap before.

I've always liked dance music rather than metal. In fact, I hate heavy metal music. Along with country and western music and brass bands, it is the work of Satan - get thee behind me and all that. Terrible. (apologies to all the metalheads out there)

At the moment, I'm liking Fedde Le Grand, The Shins, Mark Ronson, Justin Timberlake, Samim, amongst others. What are you liking?

Here's a few songs I like -

Oh man, so much stuff. Some top genres would be:

80s/90's hair band type rock
Canto-pop
Chinese Opera

Lately I've been on a Beatles kick, having finally "discovered" them at almost thirty years old   ::)

Hey, Sam, I guess we're about the same age, and I've just decided to collect vinyl.  :P

Hm...I like a lot of different stuff, but mostly I'm listening to classical and instrumental these days, because I find myself too distracted and tired out by vocal music.

Music... hmm...

Okay, I'm a big fan of stuff from the time of the crusades right up to the Renaissance (Tallis being my top man from that era). I love early opera - Monteverdi - as well as mainstream blockbusting stuff like Wagner. More modern - always got time for people like Nymans, and adore every film score by Morricone.

Outside the classical world, I like early Pink Floyd, early Bowie, all of Muse, much of Goldfrapp, Led Zep (of course), Yes ('fraid so), Love, Linkin Park, Eminem, Roy Orbison, UB40, Kaiser Chiefs, The Carpenters, The Fugees, Ian Dury, Soft Machine, and many others.

I hate most country and western.

From the point of view of performing, I'm in seventh heaven when I'm in the orchestra playing Haydn oatorios, Puccini operas, and anything by Bach or Mendelssohn. Ceilidhs are fun to do too. Late Beethoven quartets. Oh, and Borodin, of course.

I could go on, so I'll shut up.

I'm another one who listens to anything and everything - but, unlike the general consensus here, that even includes country! In fact, some of my favourite singer-songwriters are from the country heritage: Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Joe Ely, John Prine. And I love a well picked bluegrass tune, be it on five string banjo or flat-top guitar.

On the whole, however, I'd say that 99% of my listening is jazz. And of that 99% probably 80% is jazz guitar. At the moment I'm on a gypsy jazz kick and am listening to folks like Django Reinhardt and Birili Lagrene. I also love Wes Montogomery and George Benson (that's early George Benson, that is) and Charlie Christian. Hige fan of tenor sax and clatinet jazz, too. Well, and trumpet and piano.

I have a small but classy  ;) selection of classical CDs and a massive amount of rock. Love Hendrix and Rory Gallagher and Jeff Beck and UFO and... and I love anyone who can tell a good story like Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits.

I can listen to Eva Cassidy all day. Over the years my favourite bands have included Little Feat and New Grass Revival and The Rolling Stones and The E Street Band...

Also love acoustic music, especially old blues for the early/mid 20th century.

One thing I don't do so much is buy new stuff. I fine that I have so many CDs that I'm yet to digest fully that I don't think there'll be time in my lifetine to fully appreciate what I already have.

Interestingly I also have a lot of vinyl I may well be off-loading...

Wow, quite a diverse mix of tastes there. I wonder why most Americans I know seem to like rock bands over more melodic forms of music. The closest thing I like to that sort of music is RHCP, but I tend to prefer music with a lot of bass, rather than screaming guitars (and long haired lead singers), but that could change yet, I suppose

Along classical lines, there are a few arias that I like - the flower duet, for example, and I liked some of the Three Tenors stuff from the 90s. On films scores, I liked Hans Zimmer's score for the movie Gladiator. But on the whole I'm not very cultured. Sometimes wish I was, but I'm not. Perhaps if I learned to play an instrument it would give me a key in to appreciate that sort of music more. Do you think that follows, Delph?

Delboy - have you got any examples of that sort of music you could tell me about? Artists and songs would be good. I can generally find anything I want to listen to online with that info. Just a few would be great. Reason being I'm not sure if I've heard any of that music and I'd like to listen to see if I would like it, thanks.

As you might deduce from my avatar, I have a big affection for pretentious rock, from King Crimson (of course) and VDGG right through to Radiohead and Muse. But I'm also fond of eccentrics such as the Bonzos (especially Viv), Ivor Cutler and Robert Wyatt. Latest acquisition is Robyn Hitchcock's retrospective box set, I Wanna Go Backwards, which is fantastic. Did I mention Nick Drake? Richard Thompson? Joni Mitchell? Emiliana Torrini? Antony and the Johnsons? Nitin Sawhney? Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? Cesaria Evora? The Dhol Foundation? Anton Bruckner? Ralph Vaughan Williams? Erik Satie? Gyorgy Ligeti? etc.? etc.? Oh, and ANY compilation curated by David Toop.

What instrument(s) do you play, delph?

I'm another allsorts person, but it tends to be all sorts of rock and pop more than anything else. I'll happily listen to early Iron Maiden, Ac/DC etc. Fave band has to be Rush, Canadian rock trio. They often get lumped in the heavy metal category, but it's more soft rock. They still amaze me after more than 30 years together.

80's music of all sorts gets a frequent airing, love to wallow in nostalgia! I like classical, but I tend to stick with very well known pieces - O Fortuna from Carmina Burana is great to listen to when writing scary scenes!

Not a country fan, nor jazz.

Current albums getting a lot of airplay while I'm writing are anything by Rush, Best of Roxy Music and (bizzarrely!) Betcha Bottom Dollar by the Puppini Sisters. If you've not heard them, try to find them singing Withering Heights, or even better, Panic (yes, the Smiths song) I certainly couldn't believe my ears!

JonP, may I say what excellent taste you have in music. King Crimson! Nick Drake! Bruckner! RVW! Ligeti!

I play violin, viola, baroque violin, baroque viola, bass viola da gamba, mandolin (badly), guitar (even worse), piano, harpsichord, etc. Professional performing has been mostly on upper strings. I teach upper strings and piano, and compose once in a blue moon.

Ed, learning an instrument in order to appreciate classical music is not necessary. Best way to appreciate it (as with any kind of music) is to go to live gigs, preferably in offbeat and non-stuffy venues, where you haven't heard of any of the music (listening to a bored orchestra slumming their way through a turgid performance of Beethoven's 5th could put you off for life).

Oh, and download a recording of Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis". Two of my favourite composers in one brilliant package.

Curiously, not many people say that  :D

Wow. I used to play oboe and cor anglais, but gave up years ago. Too much effort keeping up the bloody embouchure.

Oh, and download a recording of Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis". Two of my favourite composers in one brilliant package.

Seconded! The Lark Ascending is pretty cool, too. Although RVW's not just pastoral. The 4th symphony is one of the scariest pieces of music ever written.
Title: Re: What do you like to listen to?
Post by: delph_ambi on November 27, 2007, 08:42:46 AM
Absolutely (re: lark ascending). I studied (briefly) with Hugh Bean, who made one of the classic recordings.

And yes, agree with you about RVW's 4th. Played it years ago and it bowled me over. Brilliant, scary piece.

Did you ever get to play on an oboe d'amore? (Sort of cross between oboe and cor anglais, for those who don't know what the heck I'm talking about). Glorious sound. One of my favourite instruments. I can't get a note out of any wind instruments, unfortunately, but am full of admiration for people who can. A friend used to play baroque oboe. Horribly difficult to play in tune. Well, it was when she played...

This is almost as bad as saying I don't like tea . . . My favorite form of music is heavy metal. I love the raw energy of it. My roots are in punk rock, but I've drifted away from it as all that teenage angst has shifted into middle-aged repose. Most people that know me are surprised that I (1) write horror and (2) listen to heavy metal. I actually find the music inspring, emotionally and (sometimes) intellectually. And there's nothing like being in a mosh pit at a metal show. You can feel the music thumping and pulsating in your body; it's a great release (although it's been awhile since I've been in a mosh pit). As for country: ugh! I live in Texas, so I'm surrounded by it, but I absolutely, positively hate it! Well, that's my two cents. (Don't lynch me!)

I'm looking for a "we are not worthy" smiley, but I can't find one. I am very impressed!

Did you ever get to play on an oboe d'amore?

Sadly, no. I've got a lovely recording of Leon Goossens playing one somewhere.

Oh, and stark, don't be ashamed of HM!

To Ed:
Dude, you guys gave us the Beatles. What did you expect to happen?  ;)
On a serious note, I think part of it is that we see rock music as "ours" hence there is a pride factor. Then we find out that our favorite singer is from the UK and go into culture shock.
As for me, it's the music that turned me onto music. Back in middle school I discovered Mtv (back when it played music) and fell deeply, madly in love with Guns N' Roses. I wanted to BE Axe Rose. Only, you know, not batshit crazy. Classical music can be amazing, but it's never made me feel anything like rock has with the noted exception of Chinese opera.

Stark, I'm envious of you living in Texas. There was a time when just about everybody I listened to seemed to come from Texas. I've already mentioned Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, but there was Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Fabulous Thunderbirds and - of course - ZZ Top. I used to love ZZ Top.

The old time blues guys - Blind Lemon and T Bone Walker, I think they came from Texas.

Then there's Buddy Holly, of course. And one of my favourite gals: Janis Joplin.

Bus special mention must go to Bill Hicks. When we're talking about what we listen to, my Bill Hicks CDs get spun more often than most of my stuff. He remains one of Del's heroes.

Kind regards,
Derek

Is that Bill Hicks the comedian, Del? Arizona Bay and all that. If so, I'm a big fan of his, too - really wished I knew about him when he came over to the UK to do a few gigs - he did one in Shaftesbury, which is only about 20 miles from me. I would have loved to have seen him live. Do you subscribe to the conspiracy theory about his death being orchestrated? Got to admit pancreatic cancer in a 34 yr old is pretty damn rare, as well as being one of the most aggressive and painful cancers out there. If you were looking to punish somebody, that would be the ultimate disease to give them, if it were possible. But then it's just a ride anyway, right?

JonP - I thought I was the only person who had ever heard of Ivor Cutler. I started a thread about him here a few months ago and got no replies when I posted free download links to his works, including 'Gruts for tea'

Natalie - I've absolutely no idea what Chinese opera would sound like  Is it lots of mandolin type sounds?

Angela - I love a bit of punk now and then. I've got a few Prodigy singles, was heavily into The Jam at one point. PIL, John Lydon's solo singles, like Rise, etc. I like the energy and the manic quality of his voice. Same goes for Prodigy - Breathe, Firestarter, stuff like that.

Delph - wow - you really are multi talented. I wish I could do half of that :afro: Thanks to the classical tips - I'll see if I can find them.

Ah, Ivor Cutler. Did you see the documentary on him a while back, Looking for Truth With a Pin? I believe it's out on DVD now. My favourite of his is Life in a Scotch Sitting Room, Vol. 2, although that's almost knock-about comedy compared with his more outre stuff. Saw him live once, and he was every bit as good as you'd imagine.

For the more eclectic tastes among you - have you listened to any music by Nat Baldwin? This is the only vid of 'Only In My Dreams' that I could find, so be prepared for the voice of advertising to interrupt the song at the end:

http://www.youtube.com/v/VmvJoUkDuAU&rel=1

Give him time, he gets weirder -

http://www.youtube.com/v/KIjzkIxxXK4&rel=1

I've got a few of his tracks and find them strangely soothing when I'm in the right mood. Hypnotic. When you're in the wrong mood, though, it could be the trigger you needed to send you off on the rampage with a shotgun

Natalie - that guy doesn't have a sense of rhythm if you watch his hand clapping at the beginning of his performance, but his singing's OK. Not the sort of thing I go for, but I don't dislike it either :afro:

Donna - I really like both of those. I'll see if I can get hold of a few of their songs.

This is one of the great things about the internet - people being able to share their tastes. It's what first got me online - Napster and then Audiogalaxy. That was great. There was a tiny programme (the satellite) you set running before logging into the site, and then any friends you had on there could send you mp3s they liked so that you could listen to them. Plus there was a big search engine where you could search for and download any songs any of the users had, and there were over 2 million users by the time the RIAA shut then down. It was excellent while it lasted, though

He's trying to get the audience to clap along with little success, it seems.. They prefer to spin plastic tubes in the air. It makes a weird noise that substitutes actual clapping

Okay, Ed: I added '&rel=1' to the end of both URLs and they're not linking. I must be a complete technophobe!

Ah - I see where you're going wrong. You're copying the url from the address bar rather than the 'embed' link. If you look to the right of the video on youtube you'll see there's a bit that says 'embed' and there's a link in a box with it - copy that and paste it into your message, then cut it down to display just the first http link:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="   |-- this bit -->http://www.youtube.com/v/rJDsm1Y4kUk&rel=1 <-- to here --|  "></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rJDsm1Y4kUk&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

I've got the forum set to allow simple html in posts, but for some reason it won't allow this code, which is a shame as it would make life a lot easier. I'll see if there's anything else I can do about it.

Okay, some of your all's lists have left me curious (as in never heard of 'em, but not beyond a listen sort of thing) Kind of weird stretch for me as of late in musical tastes (in as I mostly tend to share your opinions on country music for the most part), but I have been listening to a lot of Townes Van Zant & Bruce Springsteen as of late.

Could give a pretty good scatter on some of the my other faves (Eagles, Ray Charles, Rush, Jethro Tull, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Paul Simon, Soundgarden, STP, Professor Longhair, Don White, The Ramones-- okie, I'll hush, you get the picture); that's all just sort of my two cents in.

 Peace,

I like a bit of Paul Simon, too. The only thing that bugs me about him is his lyrics - quite a few of the songs feature words that you think, "well hang on, that makes no sense - I bet he just chose that word because it rhymes." I downloaded his 'Surprise' album the other day, and there are a couple of songs on that album that are great, but a few that leave you scratching your head with the lyrics. Probably his best is Gracelend, but there again, he has a few songs that make no sense

I will listen to just about anything except country or rap, and even bits of those are okay as long as they don't take themselves too seriously.

I love Rush and Pink Floyd dearly, but not when writing--things with vocals mess me up. For writin' tunes, I have a whole pile of $1.99 "sounds of nature" CDs, soundtracks and ambient background noise from various survival horror games (mostly the Silent Hill series), and stuff like Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin and so on.

Er ... him?

Re the comments on Paul Simon earlier, one of my pressies this year (after dropping a few hints) was the box set of all the S&G albums (in nice individual imitation LP covers), and I hadn't realised how many of their tracks I didn't know. Their Greatest Hits was one of my first ever LP purchases (although I hate Greatest Hits packages these days), and I played it to death. But it's great to hear all the oldies in their original context, along with a whole bunch of other stuff that's completely new to me.

Yeah. I hear ya. Scott could be a BIG star but he's not wired that way. Teaches elementary school kids for a living, has a lovely little family and creates his magic music late at night when everybody's asleep. He nearly died in a car accident about ten years ago. Has a framed, rather small piece, of his old guitar (that was just about all that remained after the crash) hanging on a wall in his house. Took him years before he could play again.

Here's another Canadian singer to check out: Eric Lapointe.

At the moment I'm listening to vh1.com's -- Vh1 Soul radio.

When I'm writing, I'll switch over to VH1's -- Dark shadows radio...OooOo, or well, there's plenty to choose from.

Yeah.

That kind of thing can really put your life in perspective. Glad to see he's made such a good recovery.

Heh, yeah, the oldies are goodies.
There aren't many good oldies radio stations where I live, so I go online and try to find what I enjoyed listening to back home in the States. I also like a lot of new stuff too. Vh1 is good to me. Saved me from the scratching sound of my printer.

Good 'ol rock and roll takes up the most memory in my ipod, with podcasts and alternative stuff taking up the slack. Speaking of that, my wife and I just picked up tickets for 2 concerts in April. We're seeing Santana (8th row, just right of center) on Thursday the 17th, then the next night-- Friday the 18th-- we're seeing Collective Soul (10th row, center). Can't wait, it's going to be a couple great nights of rock and roll!

Last night went to see The Buddy Holly Story in Covent Garden. One of my best mates is playing Buddy at the moment. Well worth a trip if anyone's passing - although I used to live with the guy when he was learning all the songs and woke up every morning to a different Buddy Holly song coming through the wall. All great stuff, but every morning for two weeks is a bit much.

I'm revisiting a few eighties bands that I never bothered buying the albums of, like The Cure and Madness (never really liked them), The Smiths, The Selecter. It's bringing back a few memories, and I'm finding a few new tracks that I actually like. There's not a hell of a lot in the charts that takes my fancy at the moment.

Count me in as another metal fan! Metallica rules!

I also like Ozzy Osbourne, Rammstein, and Rob Zombie, to name a few.

But unlike some metalheads, I contend that for anything to be called "music," it has to have a discernible melody. Making a lot of loud angry noise on a guitar set to screech mode while your mates flail at the drums doesn't cut it. I know, some people think that's what ALL metal music consists of...

Call me schizophrenic (my doctors do), but I also like some classical music: Wagner, Beethoven, Mozart, and yes, that Carmina Burana piece by Orff is amazing; and just to throw people off, I've got Alan Parsons, Sarah McLachlan, Enigma, and ZZTop in my collection!

But absolutely, positively NO COUNTRY!

Chinese opera is great

I've always enjoyed Chinese Opera whenever I've been to see it (Beijing, Taipei or London) - I think it's the weird percussion that I love. I have an ehru (sp?) lying around that I bought on a whim in Shanghai, with an instructional DVD. As with most of these things, it hasn't yet emerged from its box.

Wow, I expected to see at least someone other than me say Horror Rock.  Can't go wrong with anything off of DieMonsterDie's What Is Shall Always Be album.  The Calabrese, Zombeast, Cancerslug, Everdead, The Rosedales, Big Fucking Skull, The Crimson Ghosts, Blitzkid, The Other, The Staggers, and goddammit I love The Automatons and New Forbidden Dimension.  I also listen to a lot of Psychobilly, but mainly the old british stuff like The Meteors, Demented Are Go, Long Tall Texans, Frantic Flintstones, Coffin Nails, but probably prefer The Matadors over all of 'em.

And of course old Trucker Country, Blue Grass, Rockabilly, and white trash things in general.  And I'll always have time for old British Oi like Cocksparer, Blitz, Angelic Upstarts, Sham 69, Last Resort and the like.  Some American Hardcore like Blood for Blood and Sheer Terror.

Here's a pretty good cross-section of everything I listen to: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=298790664

I've just got into Fleet Foxes.  They're the very definition of 'pleasant' and wouldn't normally be the sort of thing I like, but they're also a little sinister, and have a strange Americana country vibe mixed in with their 'medieval-hippies-having-a-funeral-in-the-woods' vibe  nice to have on when writing!  I've also been listening to Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures quite a lot lately.

Listening to it at least once a day. Intending to buy his back catalogue soon, so job done, I guess.

Also going through a whole load of Robyn Hitchcock stuff that I picked up cheap from his online store when they were getting rid of old stock. The man's a genius.

Early Depeche Mode like "People are People" and "Just Can't get Enough" is a bit too poppy for my liking, but they had a hell of a run through the latter 80's and the early 90's.  I didn't get into them until about 5 or 6 years ago.

Then again, only three months ago I would have said Urrrgghh about Snoop Dogg.

I spent all night last night talking about and listening to music with a friend and among other things I rediscovered my love for pirate metal. I've never really been a fan of metal but I feel a kick coming on. If you are at all interested in fast music I highly recommend checking out the following bands:

Alestorm http://www.amazon.com/Captain-Morgans-Revenge-Alestorm/dp/B000ZOSMZG/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b

Swashbuckle  http://www.amazon.com/Crewed-Damned-Swashbuckle/dp/B000JMJY4M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1289981671&sr=1-3

Tyr - i think they are technically viking metal, but still good and similar http://www.amazon.com/Light-Northern-Star-Tyr/dp/B0021UDJN2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1289981438&sr=8-5

Korpiklaani http://www.amazon.com/Karkelo-Korpiklaani/dp/B0027GZBYU/ref=pd_sim_m_11

I only briefly checked it out, but the new GWAR album seems to have potential.

Not so much a recommendation as a side note, but there's a band called cannabis corpse who exist to make pot related puns of cannibal corpse material. They sound about the same, but the puns are awesome.

Before this I was on a 50's futurist kick.

Yep, she certainly has that quality to her. It's nice to see the music industry hasn't forced her into slutty outfits and tried to make her into something she isn't, yet. I'm guessing that's because she's under eighteen years of age. Note she doesn't kiss the boy in the video, or drape herself over him -- there's nothing overtly sexual in the vid, which is quite refreshing to see, I think. Sadly, I reckon that'll probably change in the next few years, but some stars manage to make it through without stripping off. Maybe she'll be one of them.

This is her on America's got talent, aged 14: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW6YSUFAjKU&feature=related

Early punk and even the beginning of post punk was great--but recently I've just gotten bored with music (don't tell my wife, she'll have me clear out the CD collection--'bout a thousand of 'em).  Really I just keep listening to Nick Cave over and over...

I heard the Damned's 'Eloise' on the radio today. Had a fun old time growling along to it whilst freezing to death beside a wind swept Thames.

Damn I love that song!  Never heard it on the radio before.

Ahhhh, those early days of punk.  My first gigs were all punk gigs - X-Ray Spex, The Vibrators, XTC, The Lurkers... The first ever song I played live was Rockaway Beach by The Ramones. That was a long time ago. These days I listen to Clarence White, Merle Travis, &  Django Reinhardt. Ironically, all far older than any of those punk bands. Can't beat the pure sound of an acoustic guitar!

I'm a proud Cure fan and always will be.  I love old country (Kenny Rogers, Roger Miller, etc) but hate new country.  Rockabilly and Pshychobilly are in my top listens and I'm an 80's music freak. Guess I'm all over the place music-wise.

I once met the girls who ran The Cure's official fan club. Really nice people, and obviously big Cure fans themselves. They talked fondly of the band members. I wonder if they still run it... Christ -- that was twenty years ago  Probably not, then.

This is one of my favourite Cure tracks -- what's yours?

That's as annoying as hell, isn't it?. It seems to happen more and more often lately. The music industry is getting greedier by the day. The BPI go around factories and other work places now, demanding that employers buy a broadcast license or ban their staff from listening to radios at work. Can you believe that? Where the hell will it end?

Try this one -- same song, different video provider...

http://www.youtube.com/v/nzxJ5YvYfx4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB

But even that doesn't work, because they restrict playback on 'certain sites'. WTF? ::)

Yes, that last one played, thanks!

The second one you posted looked like it was going to play (I at least saw the still image with the big triangle on it) but then it said it had been blocked for copyright reasons...

Regarding BPI going around to factories to shake down the employers... isn't that double dipping? I thought the radio stations covered the expense of licensing the music they play. Surely they don't intend to go to every household that has more than one occupant and try to get fees ??

Absolutely. The trouble is, the threat of litigation for tens of thousands of pounds is enough to induce most to pay the money for a broadcast license, rather than risk being prosecuted. They are now going around construction firms doing the same thing. I'd like to see how they got on if they came to us -- there's often a cacophony of sound on site, because all the old farts are listening to Classic Rock FM, the young bucks to Kiss 101, and the in-betweeners to Virgin Radio. Are they going to make everybody buy a license? I'll be telling them to go fuck themselves. As you say, the radio companies pay the broadcast fees so that their listeners can hear them. Whose radio they hear it through is broadly irrelevant, IMO. :pissed: Greed

Where I'm working there's a lot of different radio stations on the go. I can't pick up Planet Rock at work so listen to Virgin Absolute Radio. When I hear a different station, most of them are the work on Satan in my opinion, I say, "Here mate I think your radio's busted," they reply, "why what's wrong with it?" and I say, "there's a really bad sound coming out of it."  :afro:

What's with that Cure video. Were they really crap lip synchers or is the music about ten seconds behind the video?

If you ever get the urge to watch a really depressing film, the one made about the Joy Division lead singer takes the biscuit. I watched it for the first time a few weeks back. It's hard to believe epilepsy treatments were as archaic as they were such a short time ago. I get the impression it's not a hell of a lot better now, but the choice of drugs has improved. Not that much, though, judging by the recent furore over babies damaged by Epelim when the drug was meant to be safe for use during pregnancy. I don't think any drug is truly safe to take during pregnancy.

I can't remember, TBH. I'd imagine the NME probably featured them at some point, and I certainly remember hearing them on the radio. Love Will Tear Us Apart was their biggest hit before Ian's death and they changed the name of the group to New Order, then Blue Monday was huge. Their earlier stuff had loads of energy to it, though.

Wah wah wwwwaaahhhhh

I love Joy Division.  A stoner (as in, whiskey and cigarettes style, not drugs) band I love to bits called Karma to Burn covered Twenty Four Hours on their eponymous album, brilliantly.  I like a fair amount of proto-punk, mind you.

As to what I'm currently listening to: a French mathrock (ie complicated rhythms and wonky time signatures) band called 37500 Yens is proper rocking my world.  Not really loud, and with quite a big jazz flavour [especially the sax-heavy Canard Boiteux, which can be heard on their site]: http://www.myspace.com/37500yens (http://www.myspace.com/37500yens)

I am currently (literally) listening to The Dead Weather's 'Horehound'. Great album; but what else would one expect from Jack White?

I've been on a Brandon Flowers, MGMT, and LaRoux kick lately. I don't think I've listened to much else in the last four months. Except the album of Gregorian chants the new neighbor lent my mom the other day.

He also gifted my mother Pink Floyd's 'More'-- she is still proud that in her lost youth it was the first album she ever bought,-- which I'd never heard before; Brilliant, of course.

On a holiday note, I thought I'd warn everybody off Bob Dylan's Christmas CD... think the man's lost his mind... and not in a good way.... (shudder)

Bells of Dublin is my favorite Christmas album-- get that, and save yourself a nauseating hour...Unless you like a laugh. Dylan's would make a great gag gift. :afro:

A fact that horrifies my mother-- she says we should grieve for him... not laugh. Not Dylan.

I love those too :afro:, but I grew up with 'The Bells of Dublin' in the house-- often out of season! It will always be first, I think. 'O Holy Night' with Ricki Lee Jones is just brilliant :smitten:, and I don't see a wren without the Wren Medley running through my head.

I associate baking with Sinatra, Crosby, etc.; they've always been the Christmas favorites in my grandparent's house. My paternal grandmother, until the last few years, has always baked dozens and dozens of cookies for Christmas. I have fond memories of singing 'White Christmas' at the top of my lungs, covered from head to toe in flour, cocoa and molasses. (Really, it's not such a different image from how I am when I bake now; except now I'm more likely to be singing something by System of a Down.... Despite my best attempts, I am not neat!)

I assure you, Grill, to those of us among the non-drinking-- it matters very much what is playing!  There is nothing like being stuck in a room with semi-buzzed people when an intolerable song comes on, and you are the only one to notice!

I do like the old classics, as it were, but I also occasionally listen to 'The V/VVM Christmas Pudding', which is an album of horribly mangled Christmas hits, as destroyed by the noise artist V/VM.  It's certainly not easy-listening, and is without a doubt the most evil thing you'll ever hear, but as a counterpoint to hearing 'Rock n Roll Christmas' in every single department store it's unrivalled

The 'Christmas music' from Handel's 'Messiah' always puts me in the right mood this time of year. Also of course, the exquisite Shepherds' Farewell from Berlioz's 'L'Enfance du Christ'. Absolutely gorgeous. Nearly on a par with Wizzard's 'When the snowman brings the snow'.

Watched this programme the other day on BBC 4 that featured David Gray, KT Tunstall and Ray LaMontagne singing their songs and talking about how they write, where the ideas come from, etc. I found it really interesting, and enjoyed the music very much. I never particularly listened to KT Tunstall before, but watching her on this prog made me realise what a talent she is. You can tell she used to busk, I think. Impressive how in this song and Black Horse she sets up her own samples at the beginning of the song and goes on to give one hell of a rich performance for a single artist. Love this track:

Yeah, must admit I'm starting to see a certain formula at work. There's a definite tendency to have bits in each song the crowd can croon along to (Throw those curtains wide, etc.). Another thing that's starting to annoy me is the lyrics are complete bollocks. I think you can go one way or another -- you can write songs that are deep and meaningful, or you can write pop songs that don't pretend to be anything other than a bit of fun, but I think if you try to hit the middle ground with something that sounds like it should be deep and meaningful, but is in fact complete bollocks, it comes across as dishonest and pretentious.

Damn dell, nice.  :afro:

There's a local band called The Bear that I would love to turn you all on to, but they don't seem to exist on the internet. Imagine Billie holiday crossed with Sookie Stackhouse backed up with a perfect blend of jazz and hilllbilly folk. I'll post a link if there's ever anything to link to.

Hey Del--loved it--Mississippi John Hurt is one of my favorites...great job...I could never get used to using a Capo myself which is too bad...great job

Nice one, Del. Wish I could play half as good as you -- I can't even get a clean chord with my banana fingers. I half wondered about having a go at tuning a guitar to one note and then using a bar combined with finger-picking. I think it's a bit late in the day for me anyhow :afro:

Thanks guys.

Ed, it's an acknowledged technique - tune to a chord and then just use a barre right across all the strings and away you go. Back when I were lad I had an album by the amazing Ted Hawkins - he used to do this and even wore a heavy rubber glove on his left hand - so your banana fingers have no excuse. There's little footage of Ted but if you have a look at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYduHB_X-Ig&feature=related

you can see it clearly. Pretty amazing really.  Another very famous exponent of this style is Richie Havens who was one of the stars of the great Woodstock movie.

But it's probably not a good idea to take up the guitar - it destroys your writing career!

What about Seasick Steve -- I think he tunes to one chord, doesn't he, Del? You'd know more about it than me. Wouldn't mind being able to do what he does. The guy can play pretty much anything on anything. :afro:

It's not just guitarists who play around with tunings. Back in the seventeenth century, an Austrian composer called Biber was doing the same with violin music. I have a whole book of his stuff that requires different tunings in order to make chords possible that you wouldn't be able to do otherwise. Surprisingly hard to get your head around since virtually no music since for the violin has mucked around with the tunings. Anyway. Enough of violins. Here's a viola (played by me). No video, as I don't have a video camera.

Lovely! I do like a bit of the bigger violins. The sound effects made me think of the CDs for sale in my local new age shop. Was that the intention?

Thanks Del.

I did the original viola recording, an internet friend said could he add some stuff, I said, yes, fine - sent him the file, he added the electronic stuff, and sent it back. That was four or five years ago. He did tell me how he'd done the sound effects, but I've completely forgotten, and I don't have a current email address for him so have no way of contacting him (hence not crediting his full name, as I can't ask him for permission). So as to whether we were going for a new agey type of effect, I really couldn't say  - but yes, I know what you mean.

Not sure how many of you will like this, but David Lynch's Crazy Clown Time is one of the most interesting albums I've heard in a long time. The more I hear it the more I love it.

I LOVE David Lynch's music! 'The Pink Room' is one of my favourite songs of all time. I've always said, if I could only ever use one guitar sound for the rest of my life, it's be Lynch's haha

I've dropped a couple of new videos on You Tube recently. Pretty embarrasing facial expressions, but there's a well known condition that links guitar players fingers with the muscles in the face, so whenever we bend a note part of the face contorts, grimaces, or worse.

Here's one of them:

It's true! My brother does the same thing! We always called it his "rock star" face; didn't realize what it was though!  I guess it's a small price to pay for musical talent.

I think I would've liked the Lynch video better when I was younger. I still like the strange stuff, but not so much "trippy."

Nice Del. Don't worry about the guitar face. It's a common affliction, and yours is a lot less noticeable than most. My wife wants to put a photo book together of the best guitar faces we've seen at shows, but she can never remember her camera.

I'm revisiting Earth's back catalogue. They started as a drone project, but then turned into this beautiful 'dark country' type band:

I listen to everything from Jazz (such as Miles Davis) to Cradle of Filth. I used to be into music so much more than I am now, but I find that I still love music. Lately, I also listen to a lot of dark ambient music while I write. I find that it helps me get into the zone.
