Title: Cafe Doom's Seventh Annual Short Story contest
Post by: Ed on September 13, 2011, 02:58:29 AM
(http://www.onebuckhorror.com/sites/default/files/mix_and_match_logo.gif)

It was a real struggle getting things together this year, but we got there in the end. We are teaming-up with a promising and relatively new publishing company called One Buck Horror, for this year's competition. Here are this year's guidelines:

We're looking for the best in original horror fiction in 3000 words or less: classically-styled tales in the tradition of writers like Richard Mattheson, Stephen King and Robert Bloch, yet wholly original and modern. We're open to all themes and subgenres, as long as it's effectively written and, above all, scary. The winning entry will be published in a future volume of One Buck Horror, and receive a professional payment rate of 5 cents per word.

All entries must conform to our submission guidelines, which can be found at www.onebuckhorror.com/submissions.

We’re sticking with the same format as the past few years, which is a fairly unusual way to run a comp, because all the entrants get to have their say about the stories and pick their favourites.

What happens is each entrant has to join the Cafe Doom forum (if they’re not already a member), then send their entry to blunted (at) cafedoom.com via an e-mail attachment in .rtf or .txt format, single spaced, line breaks instead of indents to denote paragraphs, and use BB Code to format any italics, etc.

In the body of the e-mail, they must state their forum name and the title of their story. DO NOT POST YOUR STORY IN THE BODY OF THE E-MAIL.

On 31st October, the day following the closing date of the competition, all the stories will be posted anonymously on one forum thread by the forum admin. Thereafter, and for the following seven days (may be extended to fourteen if we’re swamped with submissions), the entrants must read the entries, and vote for their top three favourite stories on another forum thread. Failure to vote will result in the entrant being disqualified and their story being stripped of its points. Christopher Hawkins will choose the winning stories from the top ten entries.

To summarise –

Prizes as follows:

1st place - Pro rate of pay, plus publication by One Buck Horror.

2nd place - $100 Amazon voucher.

3rd place - $50 Amazon voucher.

In addition to this I will give One Buck Horror anthologies to the authors of my three favourite stories.

Theme – open, horror.

Word limit - 3,000

Closing date – 30th October 2011

Be aware that One Buck Horror may require the author of the winning story to make changes to it in order to meet their editorial standards. As with any other market, the magazine will sometimes ask their authors to make a few edits and additions to keep the editor happy.

Please spread the word, everybody. This year's comp is a bit late starting, so we might struggle to get the numbers this year.

Excellent work, guys!

I even have an extra story in my bottom drawer now - the one I've already written with the comp in mind is too long, so I'll just have to write another. Maybe I can drop the first one into a crit group session sometime soon  :afro:

Thanks again,
Derek

I have nothing at all. I also have nothing at all for the Willesden Herald short story competition. That one wants strictly literary fiction. I'll write both stories and hope to goodness I don't accidentally mix them up and send them to the wrong comp.

Awesome! Put a post on my website that will share to all of my social apps. I'll also post on HWA and CD.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking forward to reading your submissions!

Just a couple points of clarification:
1) Please be sure to send your entry to the email listed in Ed's post. Do not send your entry through the submissions process on One Buck Horror.com (if you do, they'll stil lbe eligible for publication, but not for the other prizes in this contest).
2) Please do not submit any stories which have been previously published.

And please continue to help spread the word!

Thanks!

Chris

Thanks, Rev :afro: I haven't received a single entry yet -- I usually get two or three within hours of posting the details. I won't begin to worry until about a week before the end, though. If we still don't have any by then I'll probably allow myself to fret a little :afro:

I have a flash that could become the heart of a longer story with a bit of work. A lot of work. A huge amount of work. But I'm up for it. Love this contest! Best on the web, without a doubt.

Finished my story and need to really go over it so that is shines in a dull, glossy black way.  Here's hoping it doesn't suck!   :hidin:

My second tale aimed specifically at the comp came in at 4k...(first one was 5k so I'm getting closer!). I have an idea for another tale if I can figure out how to make it a little more dramatic. Still hoping to be there at the weigh-in.

I'm on my third attempt, too! First two were under the word limit, but my mother tells me they're sh@%. (very politely, of course. For her.)

Have hope for the third. :afro:

Oy vey, just found out last night that while he was enjoying an apple on his porch a bee stung him on the tongue (he's highly allergic) so he had to go back to the hospital.  Poor daddy-o!

I have officially scrapped my original story for something different.  Wheee!

Finally just wrapped up a SF short story I've been working on for 5 or 6 weeks. Now I have 3 weeks to write one for the Doom contest. Luckily, I've been churning this story around in my head for about a year, so the first draft should go quickly. I think it will be a good fit for One Buck Horror, too, which is a plus.

I'm battling against my story. Can't find the rhythm or indeed the tempo , but I think this time I'm going to hit the word count... Will need a lot of work in subsequent drafts. But I do have a week off soon, so if all else fails I'll try a fourth story

All that said, I'm having a wonderful time writing it. Really enjoying it and feeling liberated by my new(*) writing mantra - "Allow yourself to write poorly."

(*) Or not so new, as all you crit group veterans can attest!

Good mantra, Del. I've abandoned too many stories because I felt they weren't shaping up. It certainly feels good to actually finish a story though, which I might do more of if I try out that mantra.

I'm still in the "thinking about my story for the comp" phase. Which means I'll have just enough time to polish a first draft and slip in my story as an 11th hour entry - if I can get past this "thinking" part.  :idiot:

Yep -- afraid so. I just post them how they come in, so if it's cocked-up, you have to worry whether judges will see past the mistakes or hold it against you, just like when subbing to an editor :afro:

I'm starting to get a mild feeling of panic about this year's comp.  :( The third story written specifically for the comp came in at almost 4k. I wasn't that happy with it anyway (unlike the first two, both of which I was delighted with - but they were 5k and 4k respectively). To make # 3 work I reckon I'd have to add to it, not cut. But as luck would have it I've lucked into a story that I'm having a ball writing and may well turn out to be one of my best ever. Alas, I'm already at 2.2 words (all written today) and not even a third of the way through. Going to crack on with this one and keep on hoping for even more inspiration for #5

Minor setback for me, but I will have to you soon. The wife spotted a hole in the story. Will be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on this one. That is my favorite part, although getting a vote is always fun, too.  :bleh:

So whatever you got Ed, add 1. That's 1 higher!

You would have to ask the guys at One Buck to be sure, but my guess would be as long as it's all your own work, and it was a small, password protected forum where guests could not view your work, then it would probably be okay.

Hi Ed,

I have a story that I'd really like to submit into the contest, but it's at another market right now and I don't know if I will get it back by the end of the month. That market accepts simultaneous submissions, and so does One Buck Horror, so I was wondering if it might be OK to "simulsub" it?

Sorry about that, Flirty -- I would have liked to have kept it at 5k, like last year. I struggle to write anything shorter than that myself.

Unlucky, QBall -- how thorough was she? Was it a passionate rip, slash, screw into a ball and lob at the bin, or a methodical tearing into strips, followed by cross tearing into squares, while quietly seething? You can tell a lot about your work and the person reading by the way they destroy your manuscript, I think :afro:

I've written about 15000 words so far for this competition    Alas, none of the stories have been less than 4k.  :idiot: The latest has come in at 4.2k. I'm going to see if I can strip it down. I suspect that I won't be able to, but if I can't it means that me and the wire are getting down together.

If nothing else, it's forced me to write again!

Edit: Managed to edit 1250 out of the aforementioned tale...so I definitely maybe have something to submit!   Need to let it fester for a few more days, read it aloud, etc...but I should be in

Isn't it strange how we always feel like we have to write something new for something like this? You would think we would all have a few stories kicking around on our hard drives that would do nicely, and we probably do, but we get this insatiable urge to write something fresh

I'd thought about subbing something that went through the crit group a few years ago, but then felt like that'd be... wrong.  :/ Doesn't seem fresh enough. And it'd probably be recognized by a few of the critters, so I'd lose a teensy bit of anonymity.

I've noticed this as well, though I don't feel the same way.  Last year I entered a story that was a year old.  This year's entry is new, but that's just because I happened to write it and liked it better than an older piece that I was considering for the contest.  And really, I'm not sure I made the right decision.  Had I chose the other story I would have felt the same way.

Maybe I use a pseudonym and submit both of them...

...just kidding.

We are at 29 entries, now, although I've had a couple of those missing bits, like the author's forum name, that will stop me from posting them if the author doesn't get back to me with it, so it might be 27.

Will the forum where all of our stories are posted by private or public? I'd like to be able to submit my story elsewhere if it doesn't win, but having it in a public forum disqualifies it for most markets.

I believe only a certain level can see the posts, so they should be private. Hopefully Ed can confirm this, but I wanted someone to say something as it is the last day before the comp. Good luck.

Yep, thanks Oz -- the stories go onto a part of the site that is password protected, so your story won't end up on internet search engines and people will have to be a member of the forum to read it.

First off, did you send it to blunt (at) cafedoom or the appropriate blunted (at) cafedoom.com? If you mis-sent it, I would send it again.

But, if you sent it to blunted (at) cafedoom.com, depending on your time zone, Ed (being a Brit) might not have seen the email yet--thus no response.

I'm making headway... a couple each morning with my coffee, a brace at lunchtime with a cup of tea, a few in the evening with a beer. I shall probably miss it when I'm done.

Some cracking reads - currently have about eight stories on my shortlist for re-reading. Let's hope I don't have 58 on that shortlist once I've got to the end...

I'm about to start #33. Hope to get through the rest at the weekend. While I agree there are some great ideas presented in the stories, many fall short in the area of characterization. My top picks will focus on those that combine a good idea with well-drawn character(s).

I already said this in my voting post, but I just wanted to say it again: this was great fun and I was really impressed by the entries.  I'm so glad I stumbled onto these forums and entered this contest.

One of the coolest things about this is the way it shows through the voting method how subjective a reader's taste can be when it comes to picking winners out of a batch of strong stories.  Even with the few votes that are in so far, there are a lot of different kinds stories up there in those top three picks.  So it's been an interesting, fun and eye-opening experience for me.

This is exactly right, and why I love this comp' so much. It's also a lesson I fail to learn every year.  :/  We can clearly see here how one story can be unplaced with a reader and yet for another it can be a number one choice. We all know that's the case and we should carry such knowledge with us when we submit tales...yet I for one still tend to submit once, get a rejection, and drop the story into my bottom drawer never to resurface... Maybe one day I'll learn  ::)

In one way, reading the voting comments is almost as educational and fun as reading the stories - where else can you  get such a clear perspective on how varied our individual tastes are, be able to compare those tastes with your own, and with other people's, and thus start to really understand the nature of this writing malarky?

Anyway, I still have a way to go yet, so I'm off to read another tale (I was cursing the 3k limit whilst writing, but it does make the reading a little quicker!).

Kind regards,
DErek

Just finished reading the 27th. Still very much impressed.

I thought, going in, I'd easily be able to pick something out using a short list of criteria, but now I don't know. Yes, this one has typos but wow - what a story; not much in the way of horror but oh, such beautiful characterization; formatting's driving me crazy here, but the tempo -

On and on. It makes me appreciate what an editor has to go through, and I suspect I need to re-examine my list of no-no's. It's also a good learning process for me as a writer, being able to see what works, what doesn't.  Brutal, but this will help me quite a bit, I think.

Okay. nearly half way through!

There's been some very useful commentary so far and I reckon by the time this is over I'll have learned a massive amount about my tale, about writing in general, and about what people look for, get moved by, enjoy, and are scared by in a story. It's like a year's worth of learning and feedback compressed into a fortnight.

Just the job, Gromit!

What he said (I'm not feeling particularly articulate).

This is an excellent experience. I hope to finish reading sometime tomorrow, and to get my own votes/thoughts posted shortly thereafter.

Everyone involved has done an incredible job, although I'd like to punch those whose stories are SO well-written that they make me feel like a total hack right in the face.
