Title: Jack-Lamp
Post by: PaulC44446 on October 13, 2005, 11:37:08 AM
Here's one I just finished that will be a cover illustration for an e-zine called "The Lampshade". I call it "Jack-Lamp".

I can see elements of a jester's cap and bells, and a caduceus.  Or have I just brought those myself?

That wasn't my intent... but everyone sees art their own way which is what makes it art.

Quite so.  And does it interest you to know what your work has attracted to it from other people?

Very much so. Why? Have you heard something?

No, sorry to disappoint.  Only that I wouldn't bother you with reactions, mine or anyone else's,  if they weren't of interest to you.

I' ALWAYS interested in what others think of my work. I'm also more than willing to explain my work and my techniques to those that might be interested or want to learn. I was just asked to start doing a column on art actually. It will be for a new e-zine called "Static Movement". I'm considering it... should I find the time.

I figured that you had found some art critiques putting my work down. They've been doing that from the day I learned to pick up a crayon.

I wouldn't be interested in passing on that kind of thing.  I've enjoyed what I've seen of your work, and suffered enough of the tall poppy syndrome in various fields myself.  :)

It's human nature I think for others that can't do something to put down those that can.

Well I guess this image won't be running on the cover of the Lampshade now. He decided he didn't want to pay for it and thought he should just have it for free. Everyone wants something for nothing now days.

I don't mind bartering from time to time, actually I kind of enjoy it. I even don't mind giving stories to some of these free e-zines just so I can get the credits. Being a new horror fiction writer I feel credits are important right now. But as far as my artwork goes, I feel I should get something for it... if anything some kind of trade. Oil paints cost money. It also takes me much more time to do than to write a short story.

:/  Sorry to hear that, Paul.  Art is seriously undervalued, I know.  You deserve payment for your expertise, not just the materials.

Oil paints are horrendously expensive - I remember thinking I'd have a go at painting, a few years ago, but it would have cost me hundreds just to get a basic setup.  All that to turn out the kind of crap I'm capable of, didn't seem worth it

Sad thing is... it seems to happen somewhat often. I just did a job for a new upcoming e-zine. It was a simple barter deal. I do 1 illustration for their feature story and they run some info about me, my book and illustrations on their site. They sent me the story.. I read it... I asked if they had and direction as to how they wanted me to go... they had none. When I say none, I mean nothing... I couldn't even get the size out of them. They told me landscape and that was it. I did the illustration and sent it attached to e-mail. Now they send e-mail back asking for all kinds of changes. Then on top of that... they proceed to tell me how I should do this and that etc. to become a good illustrator some day. Amazing. All this from a person claiming to be a publisher that hasn't published their first e-zine yet. I guess it's kind of my fault. When they gave me no direction as to what they wanted I should ran for the hills. But I like to help new publications get started off on the right foot.

Hope you've told THEM so so they can realize and acknowledge their mistake - otherwise, 'name and shame' among other potential contributors would be deserved, I would think.

Actually I did... haven't heard back from them as of yet.
