Title: Does This Look Like Water?
Post by: PaulC44446 on December 12, 2005, 06:52:50 PM
Does this look like water to you? I think the farther back you get, the more realistic it looks. This was a chellenge and a half to do.

Yes, very well done, Paul!

First reaction is yes, it does.  But looking at it critically, TBH, if you hadn't said it was water, it might have taken a while for me to figure out what it was - I think it's the black - might be a little heavy without some white over it

Really hard to do water, isn't it?  Similar to doing glass, really, only harder.

I've just asked Mrs Blunt.  I pointed at the screen and said, "What do you think that is?" and told her not to read anything, just look at the picture and tell me what it is.  And she said it was a whirlpool.  Her second guess was a spinning-top (dunno where she got that idea from).

I can do glass. Later when I get off work... have to work my day job today... I'll post an illustration I did of glass a few weeks ago. I can also do really good water reflections (on still water). This was my first atempt at rippled water though. It was very hard.

Day job? What's that? OMG, I'm late for work!  :bleh:

You have the ripple effect but not quite the translucence of water. Artists have found that it is easier to accomplish this with either reflections of objects near the water as in a lake, or by using the properties of colour change and the refraction of light in the distortion of objects under water.

Some Java applets have great water effects that could be used in more "virtual" art than they are. eg

That's a cool effect, Geoff - I'm going to try to find a home for that :afro:

Isn't it brilliant, how it slowly 'settles' after you've stirred it up?

I agree with you Geoff_N. I should've put something with the water. Like something floating it or along the sides.

Was this for some particular purpose, Paul, or just to see how well you could do it?

Actually it's for a very short story that will be running in an e-zine in Jan. The story is about a city that was half swallowed up by the sea. I think the fact that the story is so short and it's all about water that it should help the illustration and vise versa.

I've had tons of illustration jobs lately for e-zine, print magazines, book publishers etc.

Do you still enjoy it, or does the pressure of having to come up with something, and get it done, turn it into a chore?

I think Americans have a completely different attitude towards 'work' from the British.  A few months back, I read an article saying something like (can't remember the exact figure) 80% of Americans enjoyed their work and actually looked forward to going to work.  There wasn't a comparison figure for the British, but I'd bet 80% of Brits wouldn't even understand the concept of enjoying work, or ever looking forward to it   I wonder why there's that difference?

To be honest, I really enjoy doing the artwork. It's my day job in retail that I really don't care for anymore... especially at this time of the year. I'm over worked and under appreciated. Every year shoppers get meaner and ruder.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  Customers seem to treat people serving them like a sub-species a lot of the time.  What happened to the Christmas spirit?  I don't think I could handle a single day in retail - you deserve a medal :afro:

It's horrible. Where I work we aren't even aloud to wish someone a Merry Christmas. They consider that politically incorrect now. They don't recognize Christmas as a holiday either.... and this is a large franchise worldwide with over 1,400 stores. Sometimes it takes all I have to not scream down someone that's treating me like dirt. I'm only trying to earn a living and do my job for gods sake.

Ah, this illustration is for one of the stories in my new ezine.  The writer of the story loved it, she said that it was mysterious.
