Anyone know the standard type of gun carried by soldiers out in Iraq?
Also - would they carry any other weapons ie knives?

Any info much appreciated!

Standard issue for British soldiers is the SA80 (piece of shit) assault rifle and officers are given the option of carrying a Browning Highpower (9mm semi auto pistol) too.  You get issued with a bayonet too, but apart from that, you're allowed personal kit, like Leatherman's knives, and there's usually a healthy black market in all sorts of other shit.

Cheers Ed - good call on the SA80, that's what i was looking for.

Would a soldier carry a knife though - and i mean more than a leatherman ie something he could use in hand to hand combat?

You would carry a bayonet as a matter of course.  Whatever else you want to carry is pretty much up to you, within reason, but you don't generally carry any more weight than you have to.  A fixed bayonet is about all you'd want to use hand to hand - using a knife on its own wouldn't usually happen.  It's a bit too close for comfort.
