I'm upgrading to the current version of the forum software, so the whole lot might well go tits-up.  I've backed everything up to the hilt, though, so there's no need to worry if it goes wrong :afro:

As part of the upgrade I'm hoping to install a Mambo bridge, so that the front end website will be better and more integrated with the forum itself.

Fingers crossed....

Dare I say it all went smoothly? :idiot:

I uploaded a few more smilies, too - make sure you use them or I'll send the boys round - got it, sunshine?

Erm, when you say it went smoothly Ed, I tried to send you a PM but it gives me an unable to do that there here error.

I wanted to have a look at the private club of critiquers cos in between me novel writing I have scribbled  short I need to be looked at.  :bangh:  I  know it isn't a new smiley but it suits me.

Ed

Oh bugger ???

Seems like we have a few repeated smilies up there in the post box, too

I'll take a look at it and see if I can find the fault.  Thanks for the heads-up, Geoff.  BTW, I'll change your status to 'critter', too - you old varmint :afro:

There - now it should be sorted?

Very strange error message:

So, member #40, who does not exist, is now missing? Dare I say how appropriate that is for Cafe Doom?  :D

And what's a Mambo bridge? Somewhere that dances ya to the end of love or sumfink?

   Innit?

Looks like the PM problem is still with us.  It'll probably turn out to be either something to do with the template we're using, or it'll be that the ftp prog I used to upload the upgrade dropped a file or two during the transfer.

It would be asking too much for it to all go tickety boo, wouldn't it? ::)

Oh - Mambo is a bit like a forum, but instead of creating posts it creates webpages.  A bridge is what you use to integrate it into the forum software so that it shares the same database and members can have just one account instead of two :afro:

Sorry, folks, but the PM system looks like it's going to be out of action for a while yet.  I'm trying all sorts of things to get it working again, but so far it's beating me :/

I think I might have fixed the PM thing, but there are still a few weird things going on, so if you spot anything not working properly, please let me know.  Not sure I like those gaudy squares that have appeared around everything, like the smilies for instance :/

Yikes! What are those squares?  Perhaps the PM system is PMS-ing?  :D

That always happens to me too. There's always one of the myriad php files missing or empty. Hope it goes okay. I know it takes an age to sort these things out.

Mambo does seem to be one of the better systems around. Good luck with it.

The Babylon theme I'm using is fine - no squares here  :afro:

Yeah - I'm not sure about using Mambo, really - it doesn't seem a lot different to Wordpress, although the support forums are infinitely more helpful.  Makes me wonder if it's worth the hassle when you see so many users complaining that their install has been hacked.  It looks like they seek out Mambo installs to hit, from what's said on the forum.  Might be asking for trouble

Stand by your beds.

I'm going to be trying out a few things with the forum software - namely, I'm going to experiment with trying to install a portal system.  I didn't like the look of Mambo, in the end.  Too damned complicated, too.  So I'm going with a portal developed especially for SMF, called 'Tiny Portal'.

It might all go weird and turn into a huge catsarsetrophy, but I don't care, because the database is backed up and I have many tins of bully-beef to sustain me through the long and arduous journey ahead   Wish me luck and keep your heads down.

I'm going outside... I may be a while...
