Yes. I live about an hour's drive away from Shedden. The girl who played Charlotte in my play last summer lives in St. Thomas, which is even closer.

This is the worse mass murder we've had in Ontario. Rumours are running wild. Biker gang turf war? Drug deal gone wrong?

St. Thomas is dairy farming country. Very rural. Shedden's a village of only about 400 people. The aftershocks are gonna be horrendous. The farmer who made the discovery yesterday has now left home for a while.

UPDATE:

All eight victims from GTA
No comment on possible link to biker gangs

FROM CANADIAN PRESS

SHEDDEN, Ont. - All eight victims in the worst mass killing in Ontario history were from the Greater Toronto Area and knew each other, Ontario Provincial Police said today.

OPP Det.-Supt. Ross Bingley says the victims have not yet been identified, and he refused to speculate about the possible cause of death.

The bodies have been removed from the farmer's field where they were found to await autopsies in Toronto.

The eight corpses — all white men - were found Saturday inside four vehicles that were left on a tract of southwestern Ontario farmland in Shedden, a quiet village of about 800 people near London.

Police have so far refused to discuss any possible links to organized crime.

Surrounding Elgin County has a history of biker activity and several motorcycle clubs have been known to populate the area, including the Loners, the Bandidos and the Hells Angels.

Police have been stopping cars to ask drivers what they have seen.

It seems all the more chilling for the location.  In a bad neighbourhood on city streets it'd hardly be newsworthy, but in a sleepy rural community like that...

Quick update from today's news:

Bikers linked to murders
Police raid farmhouse of ex-gang leader
Bandidos member has disappeared, crime expert says

STAFF REPORTERS, The Toronto Star

SHEDDEN, ONT.— Ontario Provincial Police investigators carried out a raid on the farmhouse owned by a known member of a biker gang yesterday as they continued to investigate the worst mass murder in Ontario history, which claimed the lives of eight Toronto-area men.

About a dozen police cruisers were parked outside the home of Wayne Kellestine in Dutton-Dunwich, who local residents say has lived in the house for some 20 years. Kellestine, the former leader of the St. Thomas Annihilators and the now-inactive St. Thomas Loners bikers gangs, lives about 22 kilometres west of where the bodies were found.

Police investigators remained tight-lipped about developments, as they have since St. Thomas-area resident Russ Steele, out for an early walk with his wife Mary at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, stumbled across three cars and a tow truck abandoned on and near their property 20 kilometres southwest of London.

Breaking news:

Five arrested in mass murder
Apr. 10, 2006. 03:36 PM
CURTIS RUSH
STAFF REPORTER THESTAR.COM

Five people have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of eight people found inside four vehicles at a southwestern Ontario farm at the weekend, the OPP said today at a news conference in London, Ont.
Police confirmed that all victims were full-patch members or prospective members of the Bandidos motorcycle gang.

Police surrounded the home of Wayne Kellestine at around 7 p.m. Sunday evening. The former leader of the now-defunct St. Thomas Loners with links to the notorious Bandidos is among those charged.

The victims all died from gunshot wounds, the autopsies showed.

Two Bandidos Canada biker gang vests were hung on display at the news conference.

“The victims of this crime have been postively identified and are associated (with), or belong to, the Bandidos motorcycle gang,” said OPP Det.-Supt. Ross Bingley.

“This is an isolated incident with ties to the Bandidos.”

One officer called the killings an “internal cleansing” within the gang itself.

Police don't yet know where the eight victims were killed and suspect they may have been killed in different locations.

The accused were to make their first appearance in a St. Thomas courtroom later today.

That's a relief. Just a minor "internal cleansing." We're all better now.

Is it still the case that biker gangs are blamed for 90% of the illegal drug trafficking and trade?  I suppose it is, and that's more than likely what this is all about.  I wonder if it occurs to any of them just how pointless it all is, just before they die?  Probably not.

I don't know the stats, Mr B. But I do know that the I-95 corridor (which runs from Florida to NYC) is the main highway for drug, gun and human trafficking. And, there are all sorts of lovelies involved, from Italian mafia to Russian Mafia! Crime is international!
