I suppose it was only a matter of time - you can only play with fire for so long before you get burnt.  Still very sad, though.  He was only in his early forties and left two young kids and a wife.  Steve was killed by a stingray barb in his chest.  It was almost instantaneous, apparently.

Gee that's terrible!  :'( Must have been a HUGE stingray. Those things hurt but don't usually kill you.

I know this is a cliche, but the man appears to have died doing precisely what he wanted. There is some solace in that that, I think.

That's true - I agree, but at the same time I think a man's responsibilities change when he has kids and he owes it to his wife and kids to stick around, rather than risk his life needlessly, wrestling crocodiles, charming snakes and antagonising other poisonous creatures.  That said, it seems to have been a freak accident.  The spine from the stingray pierced his heart, and that's got to be a one in a million chance. :/

My son saw him at his crocodile zoo this Easter near Cairns. He was really approachable and had a friendly chat with him. My son scuba dived off the Great Barrier Reef just about the same spot where Steve Irwin had the fatal stab wound from the Ray. Like you said, Ed, it was only a matter of when rather than if...

Ed,

I understand what you're saying, may even agree with you in theory; but, my fiance is an adrenaline junkie. Maybe marriage and children will settle him down - and then, maybe not. Whichever it is, it'll be because he wants to and not from me coercing him. Of course, I say this as the daughter of a retired firefighter and sister of an active one.

Latest news in the U.S. (and probably everywhere else) is that Steve was on film when the incident occurred. He pulled out the barb...and was dead less than a minute later. The film is not being released at this time.
Knowing American journalism a bit (get the story, no matter what the cost), I imagine the film will turn up on television in the next year or so.

I read elsewhere that they showed the footage on Australian TV, so I'd imagine it's probably on www.ogrish.com by now.  I don't want to see it, though :/

Congrats on your 300th post, Dan :afro:

Nope, I checked - nothing there.  His family did say that they're going to do everything in their power to make sure that footage never appears anywhere.  Can't say I blame them.  And as for him settling down, frankly, you can't expect marriage & kids to change someone like that.  Just 'cause I did...
