After a comment by Neuro, saying he couldn't view attachments, I've just checked out the permissions for all the boards/member groups, and found they were a lot more restrictive than I wanted them to be   Permissions were set to 'normal', which it seems SMF equates to 'paranoid' 

So yeah, I changed them in all the user groups, so you can all now edit your posts, view everything properly, upload attachments, create polls, etc.,etc., etc.  So if you've previously gone to do something and found that you couldn't - sorry about that, I didn't know.  Try again and, the chances are, you'll be able to do it now
