Kurt Vonegut died last night, hardly Junior at the grand age of eighty-four.

I'm sad. I grew up with Vonegut's outstanding work -- at least once, I've read every book he ever wrote and countless papers, articles and lectures. I was a phone-pal of his for a while with an open invitation to dinner. Now, it'll never happen.

Vonegut was one of the giants of our time.

And now he's dead.

So it goes.

Sad. Like you say, Neil, he was one of the giants of our time. His life took in the horror of the concentration camps and his books reflected that, but much more besides. Quite a legacy. He'll be sadly missed.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

I only read three of his books: 'Breakfast of Champions', 'Slaughterhouse Five', and 'Welcome to the Monkey House.'
You JUST KNOW they are going to put 'So It Goes' on his headstone....

I am incidentally, Honorary President of the American Humanist Association, having succeeded the late, great science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in that totally functionless capacity. We had a memorial service for Isaac a few years back, and I spoke and said at one point, "Isaac is up in heaven now." It was the funniest thing I could have said to an audience of humanists. I rolled them in the aisles. It was several minutes before order could be restored. And if I should ever die, God forbid, I hope you will say, "Kurt is up in heaven now." That's my favorite joke.
