George Melly dies
« on: July 08, 2007, 03:22:24 AM »

What a shame. George Melly died yesterday at the age of 80, after suffering lung cancer and vascular dementia. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005 and refused treatment for it.

Great sense of humour. When asked how he felt about the dementia, he said, "As a surrealist I’m quite enjoying it."

Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

You're probably right, but some people have a self destructive streak and would rather die on their own terms than live by the rules, which is pretty cool in its own way, as long as they don't whine later when the inevitable happens. Serge Gainsborough was a bit like that - used to smoke 100 Gaulouse a day and drink at least a bottle of hard liquor a day - and when he was told he would die within six months if he didn't change his ways he upped his consumption. He died in less than six months and probably wasn't sober enough to manage a whine. Maybe a wheeze or two, but not a whine

C'est la vie... et le mort :afro:
