« on: September 07, 2007, 06:25:03 PM »
HARTFORD, Conn. - Author Madeleine L'Engle, whose novel "A Wrinkle in Time" has captivated generations of schoolchildren and adults since the 1960s, has died, her publicist said Friday. She was 88. L'Engle died Thursday at a nursing home in Litchfield, said Jennifer Doerr, publicity manager for publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

The Newbery Medal winner wrote more than 60 books, including fantasies, poetry and memoirs, often highlighting spiritual themes and her Christian faith.

For many years, she was the writer in residence and librarian at the Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.

She had a long, full life! That book was one of my favorites. In an interview one time she said she had been criticized for writing about witches, and that her work was Satanic. Sound familiar? Like JD Rowling's work, some idiots hear the word witch and go on the attack without ever reading the books.

Ashamed to say I've never heard of her :/ I'll have to put A Wrinkle In Time on my to be read list.

Shame that she had to go out in a nursing home. You'd hope with 60 books under her belt she would have been able to afford to stay in her own home. Mind you, at the age of 88 she might not have known the difference I suppose.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

Her books were a joy to read. My daughter couldn't get through them fast enough so she could pass them into my waiting hands. Bon voyage, Madeleine.
