This would be an amazing story if some of us hadn't already met someone online just like this woman!

What a loon. I wonder if Janet, Maggie, Amoria, or whatever name she's currently going by has read this? Could be the same person, for all we know

I'm afraid there's probably more than one of them, Ed.

Yep - on a forum I used to frequent a few years ago, the guy who ran it turned out to have ten or more identities on his own forum, both male and female. Each identity would converse with the others and with ordinary forum members on a regular basis. The deception only came to light because he would occasionally lose track of which name he was posting under and say the wrong thing. Eventually a few of us caught on and started putting the pieces together.

The odd part was he would pose as female characters, too, complete with photographs and all, and he, posing as a woman, would flirt with men on the forum.  :idiot:

That's got to be tough when it's the forum owner! I mean where would you go to complain? Mind you, that behaviour sounds vaguely familiar. You're not on about who I think you're on about, are you, Ed?  ::)

Probably not. There's definitely more than one of them out there.

LOL  No, I wasn't talking about him.

Munchausen by Internet, cybersickness, factitious disorder ... since the 'outing' of Lynn/Janet/Margaret et al in writers' forum cyberland last week, I've discovered (with the help of some friends) that cyber schizos are way more prevalent than I ever imagined.

It's creeping me out, big time.

Hmmm ... fodder for some writing, perhaps?

At least with Mike Broemmel, his duplicitous personas were a misguided interpretation of contemporary marketing ploys.

I learned a new word this week ... sockpuppet. THAT'S what Mike was doing, creating sockpuppets!

Just add a life-like doll (full size, all parts functional) et voila! You have not only a persona, but one you can photograph and post on the web, without running the risk of having your own face recognized.

Hmmm....Sounds like a group story, Donna!

This is fun -- and surprisingly accurate: http://www.hackerfactor.com/GenderGuesser.html#Analyze

Paste in a piece of text and it'll weigh up the likely gender of the author.

Be sure to read how it's done.

I had a surprising result the other day when I fed in the informal part of a note to author Maggie Ball in Australia (it correctly concluded all male)

Then, from the same email, I fed in a formal letter draft I'd written in what I perceived as Maggie's style, purporting to come from Maggie to a TV company (all female)

Cheers. Neil

Yes, sockpuppet is a great word, isn't it? Conjures up all sorts of images!

I tried the gender thing and apparently I'm a weak female...

Ed

I still prefer the term 'clone' - it's more sinister sounding, which I think is fitting, as most times the person is doing it to deceive, and to cause trouble.

But sockpuppet's such a FUN and funny word, isn't it? And most internet deception, when viewed in hindsight, is rather sadly funny.
