Another expensive weekend, here. Bought a new lawnmower, because the crappy old Flymo fell to bits -- even my bodging it up with duct tape didn't help this time. The new Bosch mower is so much better than the Flymo ever was that we're now wondering how we ever put up with the old one so long. Customer reviews of the mower mostly say the exact same thing.

Bought a load of tiles for the new house. Should be enough to do the bathroom and kitchen. Did the bathroom floor this afternoon, after strengthening the floor with marine ply. I'll grout it tomorrow night and probably get on with the wall tiles as well. Then I can finish second fixing the bathroom suite, and that'll be one room done.

Should get a comparison price back on the kitchen units Monday afternoon. Can't believe the amount of credit these companies are prepared to give to first time customers. I opened one trade account this week and immediately had a credit limit of ten grand. Because I walked in wearing my Snickers workwear and steel toecaps, they assumed I was in the trade (I'm in a trade, but not the kitchen fitting one) and gave me 75% discount off the list prices, plus another ten percent off my first purchase. Crazy. :idiot:

Another week of work ahead. It feels really strange having worked all weekend -- I get to about Tuesday and it feels like it should be Thursday or Friday. I'm all out of whack.

I still use a push mower - luckily my two lawns only take 40 mins to mow. Good exercise and I like to do something during the day that isn't electricity-powered. Trouble is they no longer make quality push mowers so the current ones  fall to bits, go blunt and skip over trickier grass blades like couch. I mow for my father-in-law and he has an ancient heavy Qualcast push mower. Excellent machine even though it is a workout to carry it from the shed over borders to the lawn.

A chap at my Chester SF book group social on Saturday didn't know I wrote my  SF mystery Exit, Pursued by a Bee he's seen in the library, until another  member  told him. In front of me he took out his Kindle and bought it. Then noticed the other books of mine on my author page http://amzn.to/jj2RbA and bought a few more even though he doesn't normally read thrillers. All I need to do now is to visit in person ten  thousand book groups and  I've made it!

Go for it!

I was in the living room yesterday watching the telly and I heard the resident blackbird singing just outside the kitchen door and flapping around a bit. Thought nothing of it until I went into the kitchen to make a cuppa and saw a 'deposit' on the kitchen sink. Cheeky blighter! Good thing hubby wasn't around as he has a bit of a bird phobia. Just about copes with my budgie, but would have a fit if a blackbird flew into a room he was in.

Was supposed to do tiling over at the house last night, but #1 son was panicking when I got home, so I ended up helping him make a model guillotine for history homework. He was getting in a right state. Bits of split wood all over the place, too small nails sticking out at jaunty angles. He's had two weeks to do it, but guess what -- it's due in today ::) We got it done, but it took all evening. Still, hopefully he will learn from it and next time won't be such a panic. (fat chance)

That's one lesson the boy in my household has never learned. 12 years of school and homework is still left to the very last minute and often panic ensues when he discovers there's no ink or paper in the printer and it's 10:00 at night.

you only got yourselves to blame.....

i always do my kids' homework well before the due date

that way my kids tell about ALL their homework and i stay on toppa things ...... not like yous whose kids only tell you about the homework they feel like telling you about anf to heck with the rest....

The annoying thing about my son is not only does he leave things to the last minute but it always works out for him that way. Even now he's a dad and with a responsible job he applies the J.I.T. principle. Unlike my father-in-law who applies  W.I.F.  wait in front. I'm more of the latter.

I heard - via a pool hall rumour - that Lee Child's character Jake Reacher is going to appear in a film. For those not in the know Reacher is six foot five and built like a tank. Great idea I thought then the Tom Cruise bombshell landed.
Oh my.

Other news for my very limited writing life. Got a second rejection for my The Cell story, this time from The Horror Library. They said the story made it past the editing staff, which is encouraging, but wasn't quite what they wanted. They had a thousand submitted stories so my little effort didn't do so bad. Think I'll give The Cell one last try then give it up for dead.
Some may say slaughtered is too strong a word...but I like the sound of it.

Ed

Tom Cruise? WTF -- he's barely three foot tall. Fine if they're remaking Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but Jake Reacher -- has the world gone completely mad?

Pretty good that Cell made it into the final cut there, Caz -- so close. Better luck next time.  :afro:

Ya, great news on getting The Cell that far. That says something good about your story for sure.

Um, I think it's Jack Reacher.

Regardless, I can't see TC in that role. But then, that's what people said when he was cast as Lestat in Interview with the Vampire, and he did a creditable job. I'm not sure Reacher's height is really that crucial, and Hollywood has become rather adept at making Tom appear taller than he is.  ;)

Still. I'd MUCH rather see Jason Stratham in the role!  :smitten:

I'm off to  Newcastle-Upon-Tyne tomorrow for the annual writer's 'holiday' run by the forum UKAway. It says UK but the  site mod lives in the Netherlands, and the main chap is Irish. A few US writers have snuck in  too. I wasn't born in the UK either, but that's another story. We are hosted in Newcastle by the chair of that city's writers' circle who are to meet with us for poetry / writing / reading sessions and socialising. I'm hoping to flog a few books - my rucksack now weighs a ton - but mainly to write, write, write. Should be good, though I hanker for UKAuthors' Away weeks that were in Mediterranean islands - sigh.
