Morbid Misery

Id Software prides itself on all of its games pushing the envelope and each new one somehow besting its predecessor.

Quake was released in 1996 and it is said that this is the Game that John Carmack wanted to create back in 1993 when Doom was released. It had it all, Gothic and satanic imagery, a killer sound track, explosive weapons and ugly 3D enemies. Plus if you loaded up the Game with the Killer quake Mod then you became a walking Maelstrom of death and destruction effectively turning the game from a M 15+ game to a R 18+ game. I still remember fighting 3 Shamberler monsters with my Thunderbolt and killing two of them in a river by jumping up onto the river bank and aiming the Thunderbolt into the water = Instant Carnage.

Then in 1997 Id Software brought out Quake II while not a direct sequel the game still was a fantastic sci-fi fps instead of a Gothic demonic horror fps. The weapons looked better and the effects were unbelievable so much so that Game designers were still using the QII game engine as late as 2002. It had a good sp and mp mix and all in all one of the best games of '97 even after Valve's Half-Life released a year later.

Quake III Arena and Team Arena add on set the benchmark further still. While the third in the franchise lacked a normal sp component it made up for it with its mp component and along the way fixed up the limitations that plagued Quake II's mp.

Now ignore that crappy Unreal Tenement franchise as its nothing more than a cheap rip off of Quake III.

Quake IV. Finally all the components came together. The mood and suspense and oh god feeling from Quake, The continuation of Quake II's story line which not only is a direct sequel but also expands on the original source material. It has the fast paced and erratic feeling popularised in Quake III and finally the dynamic lighting and shadow effects popularised in Doom III. All up we can't say which is the better game as they all bring something fantastic to the table but by far Quake IV stands out as the most engaging of the four.
