Woot! and all that.

May I be the first to suggest a book?  If it's alright, I'd like to suggest

Wells Tower - Everything Ravaged Everything Burned

I have never heard of this author, but I recently picked it up in my local library.  It's a collection of short stories, and, I haven't read any of it yet, but it seems to be off-kilter drama.  I think that ought to serve as a description :D the blurb suggest a mix of weird elements and drama that *hopefully* should appeal a cross-section of folks.

Anyway, I'll leave it with you folks  ;)

I read the Amazon write-up on it and it's a short story collection, rather than being a novel - http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Ravaged-Burned-Stories/dp/0374292191 - TBH, I was hoping our first book might be both a novel and one of the books in the 'must read' list I posted the other day, though I'd be happy to go with the majority vote, whatever that might be.

If it fell to me to make a choice from the list it would be The Ghost Pirates by William Hope Hodgson, because I really liked the write-up about it. Sounded good to me. http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Pirates-William-Hope-Hodgson/product-reviews/1557424098/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful?ie=UTF8&coliid=&showViewpoints=1&colid=&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending

But like I said, I'd be happy to go with the majority vote, so if there's another suggestion, bring it on

I vote for The Ghost Pirates by William Hope Hodgson because it was the Horror Checklist post that breathed life in to the idea for this board.

Sorry Rev.  :/

So, a few questions;

1) How long before the get go?
2) How long before the discussion
3) Do we add a 48 hour poll to vote on the suggested books or just rely on posts (it could be interesting for a pole because even those that do not fancy the idea of partaking in the discussion could direct what book it is to be!)

Doing a collection of shorts would be fun, but it would mean a whole new discussion with each new story. A single short story might be a good way to kick this thing off. If everyone taking part subscribed to the same magazine, or had a copy of the same anthlogy, then that could work. Kind of a test run. But otherwise I think we should start with a novel. So unless we've all got subscriptions to Cemetery Dance or the like, I'm for Ghost Pirates.

Woody

I think that's 3 for "Ghost Pirates" and 1 for "Everything Ravaged Everything Burned" and as that's all of us for the time being I'm off to Amazon to order my copy.

Let the reading begin.

First one to finish can start the "Ghost Pirates" thread on this new board - or at any time when discussion calls.  :afro: I don't think it really matters.

My order is placed, too. I notice there's copies available, new, from as little as £2.91 from print on demand companies listed on Amazon UK. Unbelievably cheap.

Cancel it now, and then buy it here instead - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/1406812560/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1248473818&sr=8-13&condition=new

Amazon let you cancel within the first seven days of purchase, or before dispatch, so if you get on and sort it now you should be fine.

Edit - sorry, I keep forgetting you're in the States. It would probably cost just as much in shipping to get it over there as it would to get your original copy.

That's cool, I forgot about the previously posted list  ::)

I don't have the ability to order online so I'll try and get a copy of this asap from the library!

If you don't mind reading on line (I do, as it happens) check this out:

Thanks Ed. $11 isn't too bad. Plus I don't have to worry about the cost of shipping - I pay them a flat yearly rate ($70) and get second day air shipping on everything I order. It works out pretty well considering the amount of shopping I do through them.
