I like Caroline Quentin - as an actor, and person. But I cringe at her TV character in ITV's Blue Murder.

This is because a few years ago I submitted a radio play script to BBC Radio 4. The director of that department liked it but pointed out it lacked the current fashions in drama:
1) single parent (especially mum).
2) having difficulty keeping professional job going and being a parent.
3) excessive use of mobile phone.

Then along came Blue Murder. Caroline Quentin is a single parent, struggling to bring up kids while holding down her police job. And she is always on her mobile.

So it is a formula. I hate formulae. Now if I watch the new series of Blue Murder I'll cringe at all the cliches and especially the character and plotlines.

What I should do is take the hint...

I'm not surprised that TV (especially ITV) deals in cliches. But I thought radio had more opportunities to be original - which is why most of the best stuff on TV starts off as radio. And then gets worse.

I just hate soap operas, and shows like Blue Murder and the Bill, Holby City, stuff like that, are only thinly veiled extentions of the same thing, IMO. I'd rather watch a documentary or read a book.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

Ditto.  The only stuff I watch on TV are Neighbours, and films
