Bunch of saw movies, edward scissor hands, and a bunch of sci fi channel originals so far. What happened to spending holloween watchin horror flics on tv?

As I don't have cable I can't really comment about this, but the new dtv nonsense hasn't helped the movie quality.
In fact, I would say one of the best movies on the 'This Movie Channel' was Hotel Hell. Very funny. Of course, this is kind of sad because I don't think they meant it to be.
I have not seen one Halloween movie worth seeing this year.
But, I haven't been able to tolerate Sci-Fi since they re-did frank herberts 'Dune'. God, that sucked!

BTW, was 'Edward Scissorhands' a horror?
I think, Sebastian, there for I am.

Pumpkinhead is an awesome horror movie. Sympathetic characters set up right away. And then they hit you with a bit of emotion - I'll never forget the look on Ed Harley's face when the "good" brother asks if there's anything he can do to help after they've already killed his son. Great bit of legend/lore there, too. Especially effective the way it's introduced - with the hillbilly kids taunting the one boy with the "punkinhead, punkinhead..." rhyme. Pumpkinhead was a pretty original "new" monster, too, unlike the vampires and zombies that we can't seem to get enough of. You hardly see any new monsters created nowadays, at least not ones that work well and are memorable. Could be I rate this one so highly because of the nostalgia factor - it was one of the horror movies I saw as a kid that left an impression - though I don't think that's the only reason. I watched all the horror stuff in the eighties, the Freddy's (which I liked for the most part until he got too jokey), the Halloweens (which I found pretty forgetable), and the Jason movies (also forgetable). I think Pumpkinhead stood out because of the characters and the emotion. Unlike the ready-made-for-the-slaughter characters of most slasher flicks, these characters were, for the most part, sympathetic and real.

I always liked Edward Scissor hands. I dug the first Saw movie, but after trying the first sequel I never bothered with any others.

I don't bother with cable much except to rent a move on demand occasionally.

Monster House, a sort of animated movie, is the best halloween/horror movie I've seen in a while. Came out a few years back. Pretty good, I think.

Here are a few of my old favorites: American Werewolf in London, Little Shop of Horrors, The Gate, Fright Night, Monster Squad, Stir of Echoes, and The Burbs. Plus you've got all the Tales From the Crypt episodes now available on DVD. Seasons 1-5 are pretty solid. 6 and 7 are okay, recommended for collectors/completists only.

Any other suggestions to set the Halloween mood?

I like the 1978 'invasion of the body snatchers'. I was very entertained by donald sutherland and jeff goldblum. It's remarkable they kept straight faces through the whole thing.

Of course, around Halloween I tend towards silly, not scary.

The Omen is always good and creepy, though.

Watched the remake of Amityville (sp?) Horror last week, and thought is was better than the original. In recent times I loved The Grudge, Drag Me To Hell, some really creepy moments in Sixth Sense, likewise in 13 Ghosts, Silent Hill, The Tooth Fairy, and for some good blood and guts action I really enjoyed the Resident Evil films.

I don't get cable, but I get satellite tv, and I'm rarely impressed with any of their offerings. Classic case of the people in charge of programming not delegating the Halloween scheduling task to people who really understand and love the genre. It's usually a token offering, with the feeling about it that no thought has really gone into anything.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

I watched the remake of 'Last House on the Left' a while back. It's brutal at times but a good film. I also watched a film called 'Urban Ghost Story' that I had recorded from off the TV. It stars Jason Connery and is set in a bleak tower block somewhere in Scotland, probably Glasgow. I was surprised by how good a movie it was, well worth a watch. :afro:

Gonna watch 'Drag me to Hell' later this evening, I hear it's good.
Some may say slaughtered is too strong a word...but I like the sound of it.

Urban Ghost Story is brilliant!  When the pipes get going really set me on edge :D I'm going to try and fill this Halloween with The Mist, Night of the Creeps and Society.  Failing that, some episodes of the 90's Batman cartoon featuring The Scarecrow haha

QuoteI'm going to try and fill this Halloween with The Mist, Night of the Creeps and Society.

I preordered Night of the Creeps from Amazon a few months back. Looks like they're finally shipping it, so I reckon that'll be one of my Haloween views. Funny I never saw that one when I was younger, but after researching the creators of Monster Squad, I found that some of the folks involved with Monster Squad also put together Night of the Creeps, so I checked it out on demand. Good stuff. I noticed your Avatar, Rev. - you might like this...
