I had a meeting with the Chester science fiction book group in the library today. It's such a hoot. I've told them I'll have to write a comedy sketch about them, (changed names) and they agreed. So far this has been the sequence of events:
1.   Two goth women ask the library to set up a science fiction and fantasy (SFF) group.
2.   At the first meeting the women insist that as they started the group we will only discuss their chosen books: vampire stories such as Buffy, gothic romances and books of TV series such as Twilight.
3.   Others attending request we should be able to discuss all genre of SFF including literary authors.
4.   The original goth women leave in a huff. The group is now led by Bernard by group indecision on who else should lead.
5.   Bernard insists that each month we discuss a SFF theme rather than an individual book eg Time travel.
6.   After a few meetings most are dissatisfied because with no set book the discussions are less meaningful. This is discussed on facebook and blogs. Bernard has no computer and hates the internet so he isn't party to the discussions.
7.   One of the members, Graham, via facebook organises a social event and lets Bernard know so he can come. Bernard, in the next book group meeting accuses Graham of being a cyber-monger and orders him to leave.
8.   Graham organises a breakaway group. It meets on a different day and venue and discusses set books. All the members of the rebel group are also members of Bernard's group except Bernard. All the members of Bernard's group are in Graham's group except Bernard.
9.   Fewer members turn up to Bernard's meetings. He feels he's over-reacted to Graham and underestimated the feelings of the group and so resigns.
10.   Graham's meetings are very popular and has grown. Some travel from Liverpool and Wrexham to attend.
11.   It appears that the Bernard group will fade away and the rebel group will meet in the library in future.

Within that (true) scenario there are sub-plots on the choice of books, going on field trips (eg to Jodrell Bank, ghost trails), inviting guest authors, and which pub to go to after meetings. Hilarious. I couldn't make it up! Incidentally, today my wife turned up at the library at the end of the meeting. I don't know if she suspected I wasn't there. I came out with a chap who, like her, is a physicist. Haha. Good job I didn't leave with Penny on our way to the pub next door! Or Hannah, who is our youngest and most gorgeous member – about 19 so far too young for me, unless she is one of those mythical nymphets who like older men.

Indeed, it sounds like a hoot.

Proving fact is stranger than (science) fiction!

Makes me glad I'm a part-time hermit.

I have to say this all too funny...
He had something to say. He said it. . . . He had summed up—he had judged. 'The horror!'

Funny stuff.  I'm with Womble as far as part-time hermitry goes.  Aside from work, family, and writing, I don't leave the house much...don't have time to.
