My brother forwarded me a link to a "Literary Review of 2011," which contained some interesting tidbits. I spent some time on Amazon looking up the books that won various prizes, reading reviews and the first few pages. Once again, it amazes me how some of these books get so much praise. Also interesting that these books tend to get a hefty number of 1- and 2-star reviews along with all the glowing, gushy ones.

The lush reviews are written by the author's friends, family and publishers. The one / two star reviews are written by rivals.

Shame that Amazon couldn't install a bullshit filter, really, isn't it
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]
