Don't be alarmed at the apparent number of guests viewing the forum.  It's the Google bots - currently 8 of them crawling the forum.

It's a good thing - gets us higher in the Google rankings :afro:

What are Google bots?  (Of course I know what Google is, but...)  Sounds sci-fi!

They're like spiders :afro:

Big help, that, eh?

'bot' is short for 'robot', also called 'spiders', because they're automated browsers that 'crawl' pages on the internet, cataloguing them and looking for keywords that people might use on Google or other search engines.  Having these bots here, crawling the pages, means that we have more chance of appearing in search results.

There are also bad bots and spiders, which I keep an eye open for - they ignore instructions left in the code of the pages, try to break into areas where you don't want them, and collect e-mail addresses that people post on forums, which results in tons of junkmail and other scams.  Any of these that I spot get banned, along with their entire range of IP addresses.
