"WHERE'S MY MONKEY?!"

Hi folks!

I asked this on Facebook but I figured I'd bend your combined ears about it too smiley I'm chatting to a publisher about editing anthologies for them (as I really want to get back into this) and they've asked what my rate is. I don't have one, since the books I edited before were done for free/beans (which I was happy to do to get my foot in the door, so to speak) but now there's a chance to get real actual money for it, I don't know what's a reasonable rate to charge. Any suggestions/advice? Cheers, chumps!  afro

I don't have a clue, but if it was me I would throw the ball back into their court and ask them what they are prepared to offer. It's bound to vary drastically from house to house. Have you thought of asking some of the more serious editors over at the Library?

Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

I've had a nice chat with a lady I've worked with (in the capacity of me editing her and her editing me) and she's given me some advice that gels with what I've been told before ie charge a flat rate, possibly linked with wordcount, but make it clear I am completely open to negotiation as there will be editors who charge less than whatever I offer - I need to prove/show/convince them that I can provide a quality service. Which I'm confident I can  smiley

Cheers Geoff - that's actually pretty spot on compared to what I was told/suggested to charge smiley
