Another musician - did this pic at my art class this morning. It's the amazing concert pianist and wearer of hats, Mr Steven Hough.

I've no idea whether or not it's a good likeness, TBH, because I don't know who he is, but it looks very lifelike. Well done :afro:

The random squiggles that you use for shading, Delph -- is there a reason behind that, or is it purely stylistic? One one hand I like it and I think it works well, then on another I find myself seeing some as signatures/words/symbols and as such they are slightly distracting.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

If you zoom out, Ed, the squiggles blend into uniform shading. I too wonder whether this is a signature style, but then on art I'm like a child starting to learn how to write who's still on A, B, C.

Thanks folks!

The squiggles look best from a zoomed out distance, certainly. That's the problem with posting on forums - the details can detract from the whole, whereas if you saw this in a gallery you'd be several feet away and it would all blend together (in theory). The actual size of this drawing is just under A4, so you have to imagine viewing that from a bit of a distance and without the bright backlighting you can't avoid on a computer screen.

As to the scribbly style, I use it a lot nowadays because it's easy and if I get distracted and put in a 'wrong' line it doesn't matter. The alternative is to use slow and precise shading, and that's a right ruddy pain because it makes your hand seize up and the drawing can easily lose all sense of life and liveliness.

As to whether it looks like him or not - if you google him, you'll find plenty of images, so can judge for yourself. I think I've made him look a bit fierce, but he saw the pic on twitter and complimented me on it, so he must like it - or maybe he was simply flattered that someone had taken the time to draw him.
