Very sad to hear of the passing away of Neil Marr at 9pm April 17th shortly after a long stay in an oncology department and after years of battling heart disease. I briefly worked for him at Bewrite Books but knew him much longer. Such a passion for life and books. Never to be forgotten. I know many here on CD will have encountered him on the former BeWrite forum and since.

Like all who knew Neil, I have a mountain of emails from him which I kept because although in some ways they were just throwaway bits of chitchat, in others they WERE Neil; bursting with enthusiasm, generous, witty - wonderful little documents.

Suddenly they seem even more precious.

Very sad to hear that Neil has passed. Yet another victim of tobacco, I suspect. He was a great guy and had led an interesting life. Always the gentleman. My condolances to his wife and family.
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

Neil Marr was the very first person I contacted after buying a computer and began the internet routine. He was always the gentleman, free with good advice and he helped me a lot with my writing. I am now what is known as an 'OLD CODGER' and I feel sad when someone I know passes at an age less than mine.
There is a huge hole in the editorial world.
Rest In Peace, old friend.

As with Qball, Neil was one of the first people I met on the net in regards to writing. He gave me lots of excellent advice, and BeWrite put me on course with short story writing. He was an all round good guy.

Rest well, Neil.

Looks like it's moved to here -- http://geoffnelder.com/neil-marr-a-personal-tribute/

Doesn't seem possible he died so long ago now, or that BeWrite forums happened fourteen years ago. My writing was absolutely terrible back then. Even though some will say nothing's changed, I can see the massive difference between then and now, and it's because of places like BeWrite that I got a chance to improve.

there was one inaccuracy in bikoman's write-up:--

it's a bit embarrassing for me but anton shmuk[intentional misspelling] is not transylvanian  --- he is an israeli that passed himself off as a rumanian.  less gifted israelis who want to study medicine and are not accepted to medical school  [due to low grades] apply for medical school in rumania. [he may have rumanian parents who come from satamara / transylvania] . i dont knpow if he ever finished medical school.......last heard he was in canada but israel is a small place and sooner or later i will run into him....

i know all of this from neil of blessed memory and from talking to  tony shmuk himself, who of course spoke to me in a perfect hebrew.

Thanks for that update, Danka. Apologies for the post not being easily found from my blog. My website had been revamped recently so most older pages have become discombobulated.
BTW there is a Neil Marr tribute page on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hootsandtoots/

If you are on fb and not yet in that group I'm sure you'd be welcome.
