I wouldn't say carnivals were 'uniquely American' though, would you?   The word itself is Italian in origin (latin = carnelevare = Shrovetide), and was the name given to festivities held just before lent.  In latin, 'carne' means 'meat' and 'levare' means 'remove', so it's the 'meat removing party'   (nothing to do with the rhythm method )
