NOTE: This is a paying market ($0.03 US per word, max 4,000 words)

Rollercoasters, cotton candy, funhouses and barkers--the carnival is a uniquely American phenomenon. Welcome to deathlings.com's "Funhouse Mirror" short story contest. Your short story (4,000 words or less) can be set in a carnival, or have the characters talk about what happened to them at a carnival or...whatever...(just get that carnival mention in somewhere, okay?) Let the fun begin!

Deadline is June 1, 2006

What's ahead contest-wise?

Let your imaginations run wild with our "themeless" contest. That's right, you can write about vampires, ghosts, goblins, the boy next door, Janet Reno and her red truck or anything your little heart desires...if your story is dark, quirky and out there, we want to see it.

Deadline is December 1, 2006

Yep - looks pretty good, thanks, Donna :afro:

I wouldn't say carnivals were 'uniquely American' though, would you?  The word itself is Italian in origin (latin = carnelevare = Shrovetide), and was the name given to festivities held just before lent.  In latin, 'carne' means 'meat' and 'levare' means 'remove', so it's the 'meat removing party'  (nothing to do with the rhythm method ;) )
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

Thus chili con carne in spanish means chili with meat

So much for exotic sounding food ;)
