From that most voluminous of resources, the Wikipedia, comes a List of Unusual Deaths. Fascinating (and cringe-making) reading, for those with some moments to spare ...

Yikes! A lot of on-air deaths and suicides!

You've got to admit some of those ancients were pretty inventive   Imagine having molten gold poured down your throat   That's got to smart a tad...
Planning is an unnatural process - it is much more fun to do something.  The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression. [Sir John Harvey-Jones]

I loved the very first one - guy had a tortoise dropped on his head

I wonder if the tortoise survived unscathed

I'd have shelled out a few shekels to see that!

1983: Jessica Savitch, NBC television news anchor, drowned after the car she was riding in fell into a canal, flipped over, and sank in mud, sealing the doors shut.

This one freaked me right out. I'm claustrophobic and almost started to panic just reading it. The poor woman, what a way to go!
:/

I sometimes wonder if I'd have the presence of mind to break out of a submerged car, when I see it happen in films.  It's one of those things you hope to never find out.  Theoretically, she could have broken a side window with her shoe heel, crawled out through the mud and swum to the surface, but it's another thing to actually do it, cold, disoriented and panicking in inky blackness :/
