Keegan's name seems to be cropping up quite a lot, doesn't it?  All good, of course....

Apparently everyone was told not to even type his name or it would be deleted, or they would be deleted, or something to that effect. I typed it just for the hell of it. I'm such a rebel.

If I didn't know better, I'd think he wasn't all that well liked or something.

Yeah - that's been the rule over there for a while, ever since he allegedly threatened to sue them for bringing his good name into disrepute.  Although I think he does a fine job of that on his own, TBH

You should read the thread in the Dr Dark section - it's hilarious.  I never knew he had so many fans

I'm not a member of that group, so I can't visit Dr Dark, but I can just imagine the variance of opinion. It was a hot topic even when he was allowed there. Hell...ESPECIALLY when he was allowed there.
All that energy, all that emotion, all that effort...he could have energized a small country with the wind-power alone! Good God...I'm gettin' worked up just thinking about the man.
Don't get me started

I copied the thread for posterity - I'll PM it to you if you want :afro:

Great, I'm a sucker for punishment. I can't wait to see all the glowing praise, I just know I'll feel so much better about myself, and afterall, that's what really counts, eh.

I joined E a looooooong time ago and, unusually for me, I dived in under a pseudonym just to see who was there and what it was about. Now if only I can remember what name I used....

All I do over there is read and laugh. As far as I can make out the members are either, fourteen year old kids, so far up their own arseholes they can't see for shite, or itching for a fight every time they put their fingers on the keyboard.
I have found it very difficult to keep my mouth shut at times, but it's not worth the aggravation of getting involved. When I read that they all had about ten alters, and I know what the fighting is like over there, I can fully understand whey lcasa is closing the site down.
I've seen crap stories get good crits and stories that are ok get shot down in flames because the writer is not one of the in crowd. They are very arse lickey over there.

I see the lovely Lance is backtracking now, everything he's said has been in fun apparently.  One nasty piece of work as far as I'm concerned.
I've no doubt some of them are very talented, but I don't think that site closing is such a bad thing.

Ed

I always felt like an outsider there, must admit, but then I didn't get very involved and hardly ever critted any stories.  I don't think many of them wanted honest crits anyway, TBH.

I'm surprised you think badly of Lance, Jan - most of the time I thought he was funny, but then most of the posts I read of his were when he was taking the piss out of AK, so I don't suppose I got a very rounded view of it all.

Can't say I'm that fussed about it closing, either.  But I wouldn't be surprised if it popped up as a paying site after the 12th.  From the limited contact I've had from lcasa, I get the impression hir's quite straight-laced and probably despaired at a lot of what went on there in the threads.  I think they genuinely wanted it to be a useful resource and it was heading away from the direction they wanted it to go in.

I thought Lance was a bully. And that other bloke Kevin something. Anything they didn't like they shot down in flames, questions, anything.
I think the main reason they didn't like AK is because he said what he thought. Ok we know he wasn't always right, but sometimes he was and they didn't like that.
I think, (know) there was more going on there than we know about.

Sometimes I think the internet can be a dangerous thing. People, and Lance admitted doing it today, behave differently to the way they would in real life. They get lairy, they aren't polite, and they cause trouble on purpose. People get slagged off and can't defend themselves, like what is happening to AK over there now. I'm not sticking up for him, he can do that for himself, but I still don't think it's right.

As for the crits. If I could find it I would. I made a comment on a set of stories on there that had the heading Pseudo Erotica, or something like that. I liked them, they were amusing, very tongue in cheek, rude but not offensive, and quite funny. They got slated. There were threads asking what Pseudo Erotica was and how anyone could think these stories were worth reading. Yet there was a story posted on the same day about a woman who had shit her drawers and done all manner of gross stuff, (this was a sequel, may I add, to another just as disgusting story) and it was getting praised left right and centre. The writing was mediocre IMO, the whole thing was an attention grabbing gimmick and I didn't laugh once. But the shitty drawers merchant was someone who was one of the big knobs on there and the Pseudo Erotica lady was a new person.

Walker

Seems like it's all about shock value over there. The crazier the story, the better the reception-- which speaks volumes about the average age. You hit the nail right on the head, Missy, some stories were good and were ignored while others sucked and were praised. I guess it depends on who you know.
As far as Lance goes, I got a hell of a kick out of him. He seemed to struggle with every arguement he was in-- and there were many-- but for some bizzare reason I admired his tenacity. He always seemed to come back for more. Really great entertainment, IMO. As far as Keegan goes, my opinion of him has nothing to do with any website in particular, only with his ongoing actions and voluminous words. I know you admire him, Missy, and that's fair enough. I respect you so I won't unload on the man. Suffice to say I'm not a fan and it has nothing to do with Lance. Those 2 are entirely different beasts, but I'd pay big bucks to see them both wearing tights and going at it in the ring.
But that's just me, and my appetite for the strange.

Food for thought, for sure.  It's annoying when you see good stories getting slated because of some kind of hidden agenda, whether it's juvenile or intentionally malicious, especially when the same people go on to praise mediocre stuff, just because it's theirs, or their friend's story.  Hopefully the writer you talk about found a better place and some honest feedback.

I agree that sometimes the Internet can be dangerous - you never really know who you're talking to, or what their malfunction might be.  A site that I used to visit turned out to be run by two men who posed as about ten other users on a regular basis - several of them female.  They'd have their admin account, which they'd use to be nice to everybody, and then they'd have their clone accounts - some they used for trolling, some for weedling, and others they'd use to attack or insult people who they didn't like.  It was bizarre.  Come the end, the forum allegedly had over 40,000 users - but there were only about 100 active.  It turned out that the site admins encouraged their loyal followers to open new accounts every day, just to make the forum look popular.  The admins themselves must have had hundreds of accounts between them ::)  Who would bother?  Why would you want to do that? :cheesy:

Interesting you say that, Blunt.

It's now official that Debs' latest venture, Writers Den, is going back to all fee-paying, as of tomorrow night. Those of us freeloaders have 24 hours to pay the £10 or get chucked out. Last night, some nice, kind, helpful (not to say handsome!) person over there made a comment in response to Debs announcing she'd won a competition. I ... err .. this person congratulated her, and said something like "I never liked the story, but that just goes to show how much I know". I can't check the wording, because the thread's been deleted, but it was an honest and supposedly self-effacing statement.

There was then a huge string of flames against me, into the early hours of the morning, wishing that I'd get out of the forum, reminding people of a business disagreement Debs and I had a while back, calling me low life scum and a nasty word starting with "c" which rhymed with our leader's name here, and other things. I was shocked. At least two of the posters had identical IP addresses.

Anyway, those people have been chucked out, been disqualified from the Novel a Year competition, and Writers Den becomes fee-paying again (£10 per annum).

There's some nasty people about.

Ooer - sorry to hear that you've been through the mill like that, Gerald.  Pain in the arse, isn't it?  Let's hope the imposed payment of fees will stop it happening again. :/

BTW, I found the stories Jan was talking about - http://www.eastoftheweb.com/uncut/node/view/27368 The author did get a bit of unnecessary flak there, didn't she? :/

Strange that the opinions were divided - people liked 'em or they hated them. I thought they were an interesting idea, but they did go on a bit.
